Junior Parent Volunteers Needed
for College Fair Refreshments

Traditionally, Junior parents are asked to provide salads, desserts, and fruit trays for a dinner for the college representatives that visit our school at our B.C.A. College Fair, which will be held this year on May 3. We need about a dozen volunteers to send in these items on May 3 so we will have enough to feed approximately 70 reps. If you would like to donate food for this event, please contact Grazia Svokos,  at grsvokos@optonline.net, or 201-651-2010.

Spectacular Chocolate!

On March 12, the Academy for Culinary Arts & Hotel Administration held its 6 th Annual Chocolate Competition. This event, created by culinary instructor Mary Beth Brace, showcased the chocolate creations of the Juniors and Seniors in the Culinary Academy . Chef Brace created this event to encourage her students to use their own creative voice to make an edible art piece using chocolate as the medium. It has become one of the school's most popular events.

This year the creations were delectable, the concepts meticulous, and the lucky few who got a taste were left in awe. Not only were the teachers extremely enthusiastic about the tasty treats, but throngs of chocolate-craving students had to be stopped at the door. However, this competition is not only about eating chocolate. The overall winning student goes on to compete at the Restaurant School, in Philadelphia, for one of three scholarships.

Students are judged on creativity, technique, degree of difficulty, presentation and, of course, taste. Prizes are awarded to the top three in each class. In addition to the top prizes, Seniors were given three other awards. These new awards included most creative, best in taste and extraordinary effort. Each student's creation was remarkable and they are getting bigger and better every year.

Now that the Chocolate Competition is over, Culinary students will begin working diligently on their next event, the SkillsUSA state competition, in May. SkillsUSA is a national organization which showcases occupational competencies. This year, students will be competing not only in Culinary Arts and Baking, but Community Service, Prepared Speech, Video Production and Entrepreneurship, just to name a few. The students are very much looking forward to the competition and great things are expected this year.
